Light Therapy For Alzheimer’s Patients

As we get older, Alzheimer’s becomes a reality for many people. One symptom that comes with Alzheimer’s is insomnia. Light therapy is the perfect way to treat that insomnia because it is quick and easy to do. Sitting in front of a light box for a mere 30 minutes every morning can make a huge difference in your day.

How it works: With the light box shining towards the front of your face, your eyes are able to absorb the light that is emitted. This causes a chemical reaction in your brain which starts the production of serotonin. Serotonin (also known as the Happy Chemical) is what helps give us energy and lifts our mood. When using the light therapy boxes in the morning, it helps give us the energy we need to get through the day and causes our body to fix it’s circadian rhythm. With your rhythm back to normal (and continued use of a light box), you will continue to get that energy through out the day and in turn get sleepy at night. Basically, using light box therapy for 30 minutes as Alzheimers disease treatment in the morning will wake you up during the day and then let your body know that when it becomes night time, it’s time to sleep.
